If you know me by now, and most of you do, you know I love fun and am always down for a good challenge.
So let’s rewind to April when a good friend of mine challenged me to give up sugar for thirty days. This challenge was huge for me– thirty days of no added sugar. I was just coming away from two weeks of limited sugar and thought, “there is no way, no how, I am giving up sugar again and for thirty days?! It’s my birthday month!”
Unfortunately, my friend can be very persuasive and he told me if I gave up sugar, he would give up lattes. Yes, I know, I got the short end of this deal , mind you he could still indulge in coffee and other coffee-based drinks, just not lattes. For me, giving up all sugar was not an easy thing. My friend already knew that when I was little I had climbed up onto our counter and was eating the sugar straight from the sugar jar. Needless to say, giving up sugar was not something I could do easily.
But since I wasn’t alone in this challenge and he was giving up something too, I decided to give it a go..
Thirty days came and went – it was tough, but I made it. I felt better than ever (don’t tell him that) and was just happy to have beat his challenge.
After that, we played a pick-up game of basketball with Jeran and Mo and from there, the weekend warriors were formed – or as we like to call ourselves, “Da Founders.”
Our little group of four has grown, we now have teams and play for a WWE Championship Belt.
It is cool to think that something so simple, like playing games, can bring people together. Our friendships have grown through playing together and we have become a close-knit family, or so I like to think.
Play is something that we all need no matter our age, especially in today’s world where we are bombarded with screens. And while it is very, VERY hot in Texas, there is still so much to do inside, from board games to cooking together and even just hanging out enjoying each other’s company.
I think we all could use a little play time.
Just look at us, we are a group of adults, most of us in our 30’s, playing tag, basketball, flag football, water balloon fights, soccer, and more. It is activities like these that makes us cherish each other’s company. It has allowed us to grow closer in a world that is so divided. Yes, we look like a bunch of stooges out there dancing off-beat when our jam comes on, but we are having fun and that’s what it’s all about, right?
I’ll leave you with this challenge – find a group of people and go play.
Who knows, maybe you’ll enjoy it so much you’ll start your own battle for the belt!
